Michael P. Hart-Abshire, a.k.a MPH! He is one of our amazing managers and has been a part of our team for over 10 years! He is a big influence, supporter, cheerleader and contributor to our culture. His warm smile and inviting energy makes him a true pleasure to be around. He is talented in more than one area, but one of our favorite areas is his high skill in makeup artistry. Paws up!

What prompted you to work at Gila Rut?
I met Keri (the owner) when I first moved to San Diego and knew of the great reputation she/Gila Rut had in the industry and the Aveda world.

What was your job/career prior to working at Gila Rut?
Prior to Gila Rut, I was a Team Leader for Aveda here in San Diego.

What was your defining moment that brought you to be a hairdresser/manager?
My defining moment as a manager/makeup artist would be presenting our debut show, “Mystic Evolution” on the Aveda Congress Main Stage, a global celebration of the art of hairstyling that honors top talent from around the world. It had been a dream of mine for years, and dreams do come true!

How has Gila Rut changed the course of your career?
Gila Rut has changed the course of my career to expand more into fun creative endeavors like hair and makeup for the Daytime Emmys, Fashion Week, and Aveda Congress. Also, as Gila Rut expanded to three locations, I was fortunate to work at all three. I love to work and develop the teams to success and growth.

What are some of your hobbies outside of work?
Some of my hobbies outside of work are: art, gardening, music, and my three dogs.

If you could do anyone’s makeup, who would it be?
If I could do anyone’s makeup, it would surely be Lady Gaga; I am a huge fan, aka Monster.

Have you done the hair or makeup of a celebrity?
I have done the makeup of various celebrities; my favorite is Kimberly Matula, an actress from The Bold & the Beautiful. She is so sweet and super fun. She’s very talented.

What’s your biggest claim to fame/biggest achievement?
My biggest achievement is moving across country to California. On my first day of work, I landed my first magazine cover and editorial. I remember a few weeks later, I saw it at the grocery store and bought a ton of copies for my family back home.

How does it make you feel celebrating 25 years with Gila Rut?
Celebrating Gila Rut 25 years is awesome! I have been here 10 years and the culture, team, owners, and guests are wonderful. I feel a sense of pride working for Gila Rut and our community.
