Celebrating 25 Years with Gila Rut: Lisa Harris
Sep 05, 2017

Lisa Harris began her career at Gila Rut in 2006, but she has always loved working on her and her friends’ hair, “I’ve always been artistic,” she says. “I love painting, interior design and just creating.”

After moving here when she was 18, she started her career in cosmetology. Later, she moved back to England, where she had to become licensed for the UK. We couldn’t be happier that Lisa’s life brought her back to the U.S. once again. This time, she is here to stay!

What prompted you to work at Gila Rut?
When moving from England to San Diego, I did a lot of research on area salons. I knew I wanted to work for an environmentally responsible company that had a great reputation. I found this in Gila Rut Aveda! Gila Rut upholds a high standard in business, beauty and wellness, but is also committed to team growth, offering many career opportunities.

What was your job/career prior to working at Gila Rut?
I went to cosmetology school at 18, so it’s safe to say this has always been my passion and still is. I also worked in newspaper advertising for several years.

What was your defining moment that brought you to be a hairdresser/manager?
No real defining moment; I just knew this was my calling. Being able to create every day while connecting with the guest and making them feel great…what a great way to make a living!

How has Gila Rut changed the course of your career?
Gila Rut has offered so many opportunities. Throughout my 11 years here, I have held many roles, starting in the telephone room and then progressing from Artistic Director to Master Director, Educational Director and finally Creative Director. Each role took me on a journey of immense growth.

What are some of your hobbies?
I love to paint. I love yoga. I love interior design and garden design. Most of all, I love my two Chiweenies, Bobbie and Leonard.

What was your worst hair moment?
Spiral perm in the 1990s.

How often do you change your hairstyle?
At least every couple of months.

Lisa Harris

What’s your biggest claim to fame/biggest achievement?
As Gila Rut’s Creative Director, I had the opportunity to shape the company’s branding and artistic direction. This led to our work being published in numerous leading hair publications.
The biggest achievement to date, though, has to be when we presented our Mystic Evolution collection at Aveda Congress 2015. We presented on the main stage for over 5,000 hairdressers from the Aveda Network around the world. Global recognition!

How does it make you feel to celebrate 25 years with Gila Rut?
25 years is a huge accomplishment within this industry! I am very grateful and proud to be part of this milestone. Eleven years and counting! Keri, Carol and Karla: Congratulations and thank you!
